Cook County Rent and Vacancy Report, First Quarter 2010
Rent and vacancy data for the entire county are updated quarterly and enable policy makers, community groups, and other stakeholders to better understand the rental housing stock in suburban Cook County and five Chicago submarkets.
The report found:
There are signs that the national economy is recovering, albeit slowly. For example, reports from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago indicate that current economic activity is finally up, but still below normal value.1 There are also signs that consumer sentiment is rebounding, but is still at very low levels.
However, with relatively weak consumer demand, high unemployment, and low consumer sentiment, apartment vacancies in the city of Chicago are still above normal vacancy rates in the 8–8.4% range. Similarly, in suburban Cook County, apartment vacancies are in the 8.5–9% range.
